RACE RESULTS MONDAY

Houston!  Was planning to run results and commentary but a glitch in the results system has things on hold.  What I can report is that 20 USA Men ran under the Olympic Trials Qualifying standard of 1:04, and even more remarkable 14 runners under 1:02:00.    More as results come available.  A poignant note- Peter Falcon missed the OTQ by less than a minute at California International 6 weeks ago.  He was on pace for much of  the race yesterday and then the marathon did what the marathon does.  Peter- Please see this as a blessing.  CIM the first week of December, Houston in mid January and the Trials the end of February.  Three marathons in 18 weeks could have impacted the rest of your running career.

USA Cross Country National Champs!  Anthony Rotich and Natosha Rogers took home the laurels and will lead our USA team at the World Championships in Denmark this March.

The Valley 7 Lakes Marathon is happy to announce our 2020 Honorary Starter.  Phil Coppess was a hero of mine back in the 1980s.  Phil still holds the Nebraska soil marathon record of 2:16:30 set at Lincoln in 1985.  Thirty five years later Phil will be on hand to encourage those that would dare dream to chase his mark.
5 time Iowa state champion.   In 1981 Phil ran 3 marathons and won them all including Drake Relays, Chicago, and Joe Steel Rocket City (2:13:27).  In 1985 Phil ran 3 marathons and won them with course records.  Twin Cities (2:10:05), Lincoln (2:16:30), and Auckland New Zealand (2:11:34).  Ranked the #1 Marathoner in the U.S. by Track and Field News and RRCA Runner of the Year.  Road prs are 28:49 10k, 43:34 15k, 10 miles 47:20, 20k 59:22, half marathon 1:02:14.  We hope you’ll join us in welcoming Phil to downtown Valley on April 25th!

2:10:05 to win the Twin Cities Marathon on October 6, 1985 photo. Coppess, who in 1985 was an Iowa factory work and a single parent of three kids, was also a pretty good distance runner. Coppess never got a lucrative shoe contract or was put on the cover of a running magazine or made it on an Olympic team. He still lives in Clinton, Iowa. But on Sunday, thousands of runners will yet again take a crack at Coppess 28-year-old record at the Twin Cities course, one of the oldest records of top marathons in the US.
