For everyone that will be toeing the line this Sunday.
This will be a difficult Lincoln Marathon for me I have to admit. The first time in the last 7 or 8 years that I won’t be leading the Good Mates charge through the capitol city. Things have changed tremendously over the last year, I no longer have a club, I have very little fitness, and I’m feeling like maybe I don’t need to be there.
I always set out to prove Team Nebraska completely apart from every other running club and individual, and was darned successful at that. But the price was steep personally. The modus operandi these days is all about getting along with everyone else and unity. Finally one big happy running community? And I won’t be a part of that, my hard assed “In It to Win It” approach to competition relegating me to outsider status with the new order. Hard to swallow and sits harder still in the belly.
I’m still pulling for everyone that busted their butts this winter and spring, no matter if you wear Red or Blue or Black.
And run I must. The “Will vs. Bill” challenge has raised a good starting point of $$ for our Lake Zorinsky security camera initiative. So I’ll muster what I’ve got and it ain’t much brother. My goal is to break 1:50 for the half, a mere 8:20 pace.
You can still place your “wager” or simply donate to this worthy cause: https://digbro.com/forms/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.preview&id=48
And how about the news in the Omaha World Herald yesterday. Susie Smisek has sold the rights to the Omaha Marathon to HITS Running Festivals. HITS goal is to double the participation over the next 3 years. I’ve long contended that there was tremendous growth potential for the event, should be interesting. I’m hoping that they add an Elite component to the race.
“No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend’s were.
Each man’s death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.”
