That is my 2011 mileage after this morning’s quick trip around the dojo. Threw in 2 X 1000, 1 X 800, 1 X 400, 1 X 200 to try and get the old magic back.
Feeling pretty jazzed that my dear sweet Alli & Katie are registering at Millard West this morning. Back to school will be the happiest and saddest day of the summer for me. Happiest because they are taking another step towards adulthood, saddest for that very same reason. Being a stay at home dad for going on 20 years now has given me twin perspectives on parenting. My first and most important role is that of guiding, nurturing, and disciplining these offspring of mine. Not an easy task, just ask any traditional mom. They’ve got to grow and learn to fly, but it is up to us to establish boundaries to ensure their safety on the trip. Those boundaries are the hardest part of parenting, eliciting pressures on the seams by youthful exuberance, but that’s the way of the world and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Plenty of time to be friends when they are adults, but for now them being borne on the wings of fair, firm, consistent guidance. I wouldn’t trade a single day of the last 20 years, it has been a privilege.
You all know that I feel very paternal to TNB as well. This is the 10th year the club has been in existence and I’ve had to use the same Fairness and Firmness, and sometimes even Tough Love and Discipline while guiding the mates to fit the vision for the team. And just like my nuclear family, the mates have filled me with Pride. I’ve trumpeted that at every turn. Those that know me understand that it has always been the growth and development of my TNB charges that has motivated me to take on some of the biggest challenges (and biggest turds) of my life since 2002. But again, its the way of the world and if it were easy I would have found something else to spend my time on. There’s not a mate on the club that doesn’t get this about me. I wouldn’t trade a single day of the last 10 years, it has been a privilege.
Thanks for letting me wax philosophical and Giddyup!
