The Big Story for the past year is the Weather.
A giant snowstorm led to the Leprechaun Chase being canceled in March. Devastating Bomb Cyclone floods postponing April’s Valley 7 Lakes Marathon debut until April 25, 2020. The Heartland Marathon canceled due to flooding. The Nebraska Marathon started during a terrific lightning and thunderstorm, runners scrambling for shelter and early turnarounds. The same morning at the Flat Rock 50K in Independence, KS, a runner was struck and killed by lightning as he was about to finish the race.
I’m darned pleased and proud that V7LM stepped up and offered the Heartland Marathon runners a deep discount into our race, a singular show of respect and reciprocity in our sport.
Performances of the Year: Male– LRC Racing’s Johnny Rutford (49:07), USA 10 Mile National Championships, Minneapolis, MN. Female– LRC Racing’s Tessa Stoltenburg (2:41:15, Chicago ’19). Johnny’s mark a new Nebraska state 10 Mile record, Tessa the fastest Nebraska female marathoner since Roxi Erickson over 30 years ago. Both athletes win a gift pack from Vandelay Industries.
Running Podcast of the year– Meet the Run Gurus
“The Best of Health Podcast is now live. This week we talk to the Run Gurus – Will Lindgren and Linda Kunasek. You will not want to miss their insights on running. Or the great stories from all of their years working with runners across the United States. Which include working with an astronaut that walked on the moon, helping with the United States Olympic marathon trials and working with the leadership of the New York Marathon.”
We appreciate Matt Scott and Best Of Health for inviting us to become Nebraska’s first podcast for runners, by runners!
