A little culture never hurt anyone. One of the great things about Omaha is the vibrant Arts scene. The museums and galleries, and smaller venues, that provide opportunities to see works from the local talent to the world famous. The music scene is first class with many of the top acts now including stops in Omaha’s larger venues. The Slowdown and Stir Cove feature dozens more. The restaurants are first class, one of my most pleasant surprises about this city. The volunteer and philanthropic efforts are also remarkable.
I attended the Bancroft Street Market Gallery opening of the Dia de los Muertos exhibit last Saturday night. You should make it down and experience the traditional Mexican celebration. Note that our own Candie Blanchard is one of the featured artists. Her pieces are selling like hotcakes so hurry down if you want to add to your collection of the eclectic. Runs through Nov. 12.
Linda & I had the pleasure of dinner last night with a couple other of Omaha’s artistic minded. Daniel Knobbe and Agustin Delgado are both very active in the local arts scene. What started out as a business meeting turned into a delightful meal of enchiladas and Spanish rice. And an introduction to a local legend’s work, discussions on architecture, food, compassion, sewing, acceptance, and diversity- all hallmarks of a refined culture if you ask me.
Cedric Hartman of Omaha is world renowned for his lighting, tables, and furniture design. He has a piece in the Smithsonian, Museum of Modern Art, and in the homes of world famous celebrities. Over 80 years of age Hartman still oversees the daily inspirations in his small but amazing shop.
And what’s all this got to do with running? Plenty. Running has always been the purest expression of art to me. The human body is an amazing thing and when it is set free, is in motion, that is when the full beauty is most apparent. A lot of my running memorabalia features the human body captured in this expression. Not only of runners, but the powerful lines of the javelin thrower; the reaching, willing of the body over the crossbar of the pole vault, man’s ambition for flight stars realized. The pent up chaos of the hammer release. All the work of some Master Artist, the human body in motion, that too is a true indicator of a civilized, cultured people.
I’ll miss not having our Wednesday Night track work tonight but hope everyone will come celebrate something with us at the Upstream, 7:00 pm. Fellowship and food and culture.
