As part of our weekly Wednesday quest for fitness we retire to the Upstream for some hand crafted beers. We had 25 people packed into the “couch room” last night and we were all tickled to find out what our designated names were. This is how the server keeps track of who is imbibing what. Tall Lady was Kathy Palmer. Shiner was John Tully. I use the same trick when meeting new athletes that show up at the track. We welcomed some new members last night, Green Shorts Angie, Yellow Tracy, Pink LA Karen, and 2nd David. Another great night with 30+ runners working the oval.
As a regular at the Upstream I have my own tab moniker, Big Willie Style. And it fits.
“It’s a funny puzzler! I’m small but all the world call me Whale. Cause I’m Big Boy in the casino. Everything I do is Crazy Big!”
I’m down with the Whale. I certainly dig the Direct TV commercial featuring this cat and identify with his Crazy Big, “I’m All In” approach to life.
That attitude comes across daily in this column. I mix education, motivation, journalism, and humour, a liberal dose of braggadocio, a smidgen of sarcasm, a pinch of satire and Viola! I got quite a bit of feedback from yesterday’s column announcing that I am on our TNB Co-Ed team. Hubris! Narcissist! Egomaniac! Vainglorious! That pompous attitude of course is part real, part facade. Those that know me best chuckle when they see where I’m headed on any given day, knowing that I’m genuine if extravagant in my words and their desired intent.
Life would be boring for me otherwise and like the Whale, I’m All In. You regular readers get this and I suppose that in some small way contributes to your daily visit with me. Would you really want me any other way?
My weekend race recap failed to include the venerable Go Girl Run 5K. Joy Shultz, an occasional at our Wednesday night group, took the overall win in 20:02. Roxi Erickson was 7th in 20:55, and Emily Langdon made her TNB debut in 21:48 for 2nd in her age group.
The Peak to Peak 10 Mile is scheduled for this weekend. We’ll have some Good Mates entered but sssshhhhh! It’s a Secret!
“The Whale no hesitate, you know what I’m talking about!”
