Worked in the garden all day yesterday. Linda came out in the late afternoon and told me we were in for some bad weather “hard rains, hail, high winds.” I said, “Right Nostrodamus.” Ten minutes later all hell broke loose. A lot of the crops laying in the field, we’ll see how they spring back today. Bowed, not beaten. Life is wonderfully resilient that way.
Pete Kostelnick did his 60 miler in the heat and humidity on Saturday. Didn’t flex a single bicep. Kyle Clouston joined him for 15 early, made it to the Bar None for 6 with our Newest Prospect and then finished up with another 15 with Pete back in Lincoln. All in a day’s work. Back to the prospect! Convinced I can coach her to a sub 2:50 debut. Told her there could be 2 Olympic Trials Marathon qualifiers from Nebraska next year. Her and Bridget Easley, with all due respect to every other female runner, and I don’t think Ashley Miller is running 26.2 anytime soon. The “A” standard is 2:37, “B” standard is 2:43.
Stacy Mangers Shaw is recovering after a nasty fall last Wednesday. Training run, sharp turn, slippery surface, rude introduction between jaw and curb. Successful surgery and an 8 mile run yesterday. Bowed, not beaten.
The Dam to Dam Half Marathon was this past weekend. The 35th edition. Nebraska used to be Well Represented and Very Competitive at this Iowa Classic. Alas.
Top male Nebraska finisher was Jacob Kaemer of Lincoln who finished 44th in 1:21:43. Top Nebraska female was, no surprise, Michelle Paxton who finished 15th in 1:26:16. Hayley Sutter wasn’t far behind in 18th in 1:28:26.
No Red & White to be seen anywhere. Alas.
Diane Nukuri Johnson took the women’s title in 1:13:17. 2nd place was 1:14:40. My old buddy Katie McGregor was 3rd in 1:18:41. 4th was 1:18:47 and 5th was 1:20:01. That explains a lot right there. That type of Real Racing used to be a magnet for Nebraska talent. Alas.
Give me a year Nebraska. Just give me a year.
Bowed, not beaten.
