Climate change maybe? Consider the weather over recent weeks and you’ll find well above average temps. Excellent news for those of you training up.
Doesn’t seem that long ago that winter based training was all about not busting your butt on the slicks. Slow, plodding, trudging, slushy, mushy, freezing, sneezing, nose running froze, bubble wrap the boys, yak trak, ice bath when you get back.
But the balmy days have been in your favor.
With due respect to all the great marathons in the United States, Boston, New York, Chicago, Twin Cities, Grandmas. Over the years I’ve worked with every major domestic in some capacity or the other. Each offers its own unique place in running lore, none more so than Boston.
But it was the pavement laid out before me in Houston that has led to a Running Life Well Lived. Making my marathon debut January ’83. Thirty four years ago. Not a clue what to do but run. 3:08 after being sub 2:40 through most of the race, not knowing I shouldn’t be doing what I was. I’d need clobbering over the head several times with the same message before learning how to pace.
Houston is January 15 and I hope some of you will be making your own history there.
Eric Rasmussen, Kayte Tranel, and Ultra Runner Magazine’s 2016 Ultra Runner of the Year Kaci Lickteig were my offering against the best at our 2011 USA Half Marathon Championships.
