Under Cover Lover.
There were two missions for Linda and me after deciding to move to Indiahoma. First was to spread the message of physical fitness- primarily to the children- as a pathway to self confidence, self reliance, self esteem, and success. “We Are Indiahoma 5K, 1 Mile, & Stroll” filled that bill.
Our second winter brings opportunity to introduce our skills as professional horticulturists. Teaching when we can how and why it is best to grow your own food. We had a successful spring planting of multiple greens and alliums. Not so much with our solanaceous efforts, peppers and tomatoes barely yielding. Two solutions present. The first reflects today’s column title. Using 6ml greenhouse plastic to cover newly seeded cover crops (winter wheat, rye and field peas). These crops will grow just until flowering and then turned back into the soil to decompose into excellent soil amendments. Investing into the future productivity.
The second component is modifying our selection of crops. We’ll be focusing on fennel, leeks, onions, garlic (all alliums) okra, kohlrabi, beets, carrots, collards, mustards and spinach.
Both fitness and gardening have deepened our roots to Indiahoma, we look forward to growing both efforts!
I was a bit late getting cover crops ordered, sewing the seeds first week of November. I needed to cover the emerging seedlings through several below freezing nights.
This photo from this morning shows significant growth. It not only feeds the soil but also provides erosion control.
We completed training in 2021 and have used that knowledge to professionally design landscape at our last two homes.
