The Dog Days of Summer. Natural segue to a hot community topic.
As preface to my comments, I’m a life long dog lover. As a child in Central Illinois my favorites were two greyhounds that came from Indiahoma, appropriately named Katie and Pogo. Our current dog Desi is the most devoted, intuitive, and intelligent I’ve ever owned. And vicious if necessary. As responsible pet owners we make sure you’ll never know it.
After moving here it became Priority Number One to protect Desi from the dogs that roam our streets and alleys with impunity. She was outnumbered and leashed, two strikes against her safety and well being. We bit a hard bullet and fenced in our property to protect her. If you love your dog like we love ours, you understand.
There is language in our Town Ordinance Manual regarding strays and unleashed dogs. It has never been enforced but my hopes are it will be soon.
Yesterday afternoon Comanche County Sheriff’s department responded to a call on Big Bow. Three dogs eviscerated a favorite cat. A poor child watched it happen.
Yes, its always been this way in Indiahoma. Some people prefer it that way. Some do not.
My Indy-Pendent view is that our pets- like our children- deserve to be cared for and protected. If dogs are allowed to free range, especially in packs, they become a detriment to our community and need to be addressed accordingly. Show your dog you love it. Keep it inside, on a leash or in a fence. If you allow your dog to run free you are ultimately responsible for its fate.
