In two parts.
I’ve admired Bo Pelini from day one. Extolled his fiery leadership and the respect it gets him from his athletes. Praised his damn the torpedoes attitude. Recognized him as the Real Leader of men he is. To all those that called for his head because he didn’t fit your image of how a Nebraskan should behave, how does it feel to wake up a winner this morning? That’s what I thought. Beats the hell out of losing doesn’t it.
I’m guessing many of Bo’s critics are the same ones that have panned NEBRASKA, Alexander Payne‘s spot on take of the stark and beautiful Good Life. For those critics that have cried it portrays Nebraskan’s as a bunch of hicks, get over yourselves. This is one of the deepest, most sensible, and accurate portrayals of the human condition that you will ever see. If your superficial veneers, your bubbles of artificiality and affluence were offended, then I suggest you do what I did just a month ago. Take a trip along Hwy 30, see the Real Nebraska. Learn to appreciate our state as much as I do. This movie could just have easily been called Kansas, or Illinois, or Oklahoma, or anywhere USA. Because it describes Real people dealing with Real issues. Bruce Dern stars, sound familiar? If you’ve never seen the 1986 movie ON THE EDGE you should. Stars Dern as an aging professional runner trying to win the famed Dipsea Trail Race. He’s a real runner and a real star.
The 2014 Lincoln Marathon sold out 12,500 spots in less than 12 hours. All the rest are for the best. I’m working hard in my capacity as de facto Elite Athlete Coordinator. Been around this block a time or two so look for some new, fast faces in May. Signed John Piggott yesterday. One of the top masters runners in the U.S. has committed to the Half with the record (1:10:06) firmly on his radar. John is sponsored by MarathonGuide.com, the same group last year’s open female winner Camille Herron runs for. I’ll give you an occasional peek at who’s coming in, stay tuned. I’m hoping to have the record books re-written at the best marathon in the Midwest!
