A lot of running and racing and apathy over the weekend.
I received a phone call yesterday proclaiming “You’ll get a kick out of this!” Not so and in fact my reply was I was heartbroken for all of the runners that participated in the (S)HITS Omaha Marathon. Many to most reporting the course was between 26.9 and 27 miles.
The Omaha Marathon, in its 45th year, has seen its relevancy continue to drop since long time race director Susie Smisek sold it to the group out of Saugerties, NY. in 2012.
Knowing that asking the hard questions will upset some of my readers, here goes.. How did Susie gain sole ownership of the Omaha Marathon? How was she able to sell the race out from under the Omaha Running Club?
Next up is this coming weekend’s Heartland Marathon, put on by ORC.
The umpteenth Buffalo Run in Lincoln had no such issues. The venerable 5 miler shortened to 4 miles to accommodate the current climate. Andy Vasquez of Omaha led the way in 19:27 followed by Noah Rasmussen (19:36) and Clay Simpson (19:39) for the podium spots. Andy and Noah age 22, Clay at 23, very bright futures indeed. Michelle Schmidt showed age is just a number, at 44 her time of 26:36 fast enough for the win!
