Our mates will be heading to the Big Apple on Thursday morning. Wishing them Great Speed and Great Tosses as they take on the top USATF Elite Development Clubs in the country. You too are undoubtedly proud of these fine athletes that will be representing Nebraska on the big stage. You should be equally as proud that they are as fine as ambassadors for our sport and our state as anyone you could hope to have. It is their words and deeds that will leave an impression on the competitors, organizers, and media. We couldn’t have a finer group.
Hard not to continue my reminisces on Texas when out running in this heat and humidity. I was by necessity an afternoon runner for the 20+ years I lived there. Would head out the door with temps over 100 and return just a puddle wearing shoes. Nothing like a good sweat to exorcise any personal demons I always say, and I’ve purged plenty.
Doug Wilson provides a definition I’ve never heard before: “I don’t know the exact origin, but in some cycling circles, a “Fred” is the guy who buys all the expensive cycling gear, tries to look and talk like a “pro” rider, yet has no real cycling abiltiy to back it up. Often seen on the z and the like complaining about everyone in their way…”
With the Tour de France going on I am encountering a whole bunch of Freds on my daily run at the dojo. I know a few running Freds too but never had the term to describe them, funny how the description fits to a tee.
If you weren’t around in the 80s for the classic “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred, you missed one of the all time campy songs. But it did have rhythm and was extremely danceable. Dancing may be the only thing I’ve ever embraced that comes close to working up the thoroughly soaking sweat of a good run in the heat. That and eating hot peppers. All my favorite activities seem to include a good sweat, they say it is very noble and I do agree. Right Fred?
