I wrote a series of weekly articles, “TALKING TRACK” for The Bayshore Sun in La Porte, TX back in 1983. Followed that up with daily commentary for same during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. At the same time I wrote a bi-monthly newsletter called THE BREEZE for the for my first running club, The Gulf Coast Wind Breakers.
I’ve been writing here in Nebraska for a decade? Maybe more? I’ve kept personal logs with insight and commentary for over 30+ years. I’ve put down a lot of letters on a lot of pages, both Real and Virtual. Some good, some better, some bad, some worse, some mean, some uplifting, some inciteful, some insightful, some funny, some heartbreaking, some in earnest, some ridiculous, some pointed, some general.
Add all the above together and multiply times infinity. That number approximates the Spoken Words On Running that have issued from my ever spewing maw. And if I’ve crafted polarizing and thought inducing and make you uncomfortable Truth Be Told words and phrases, well that is good for the world in my opinion. If I’ve made you think outside your own comfort level, whether it be the on road or trail or track, to consider your own Relative Estimation as a runner, and only as a runner, to ask the questions that you’d rather not hear, to Demand Honesty. I’m just that kind of guy and it is pretty cool holding this singular place in our running community.
You want some of that? I’ll be holding court at Millard West beginning at 6:00 tonight, weather be damned. And if I can’t get to you Coach John most certainly can. He’s the perfect intermediary between the sweeping chaos inside my head and the practical implementation on the oval. If the weather does cooperate Linda will be hosting her Kids Fit Program, sponsored by Gretna Family Health.
NRGE mate Mike Wasson at the Ice Age 50 Mile last weekend. Shown running with buddy Steve Mitchell. Unlike me, a man of few words, here is his recap: ”
Looks like I owe you a buck fifty. I finished 24th overall and 3rd in my age group (the overall Masters winner was also in 45-49 age group). But, you can collect the $20 since Kaci destroyed me on the trail by 65 minutes! To be perfectly honest, I put this race on the calendar before I was ready. However, I ran a steady pace throughout and finished strong…wearing the NRGE logo. From mile 16 to mile 26, I picked up 42 places!
Looking forward to a quick recovery and the next challenge!”
**Editors note- Kaci was the overall winner on the women’s side for the 50 Mile and is now being spoken as and considered among the co-favorites at the Western States 100 on June 28.
