I was hoping I could figure out how to load the video of Mike Morgan crossing the finish line at the World Championships Marathon. A terribly hot and humid day, he staggers and falls just before reaching the finish line. Somehow regains his feet and makes it across, some very powerful images. There is also an interview with him immediately after finishing, you can tell by the look on his face that every ounce of energy was left on the streets of Daegu. He managed a 2:18 and was first American through, again we just could not be prouder of Mike and his contributions to our sport, our state, and our country.
Some sad news about a Nebraska running icon. Almost everyone knows Gary Julin, by sight if not by name. One of the most prolific marathoners in Nebraska history and most of them fast, I wish I had the stats right here because they are darned impressive. He was also a streak runner having run 4+ miles/day for many years. I received an email on Friday that Gary has been admitted to Methodist Hospital, the specialists have narrowed it down to Lewy body dementia. This will be very tough on Gary and his family, please keep them in your prayers and meditations.
American Pickers were in Pasadena, Texas recently. I watched the new episode last night and was transported back 30+ years. I moved to some crappy apartments in Pasadena in 1979. A block away was a family hosting John Travolta, he was in town filming Urban Cowboy. Cathy was my “lady friend” at the time and was featured prominently in the film that has perhaps one of the all time best sound tracks. She is the one that taught me the Cotton Eyed Joe, Texas Two Step, Shoddice and more. The Pickers were right in my old neighborhood last night and hooked up with Mickey Gilley, owner of the bar at which the movie was filmed and a real Country Music Legend. They picked his house piano that I danced a thousand songs to by a hundred famous artists. They also picked the mechanical bull I used to ride! As they said on AP last night, if you could dance and ride the mechanical bull you had no problems at all being popular at Gilley’s. And I got my butt whooped there a couple of times as well, nothing unusual in the World’s Biggest Honky Tonk. 1979-1980, those were the days….
Wednesday Night Track Work will be a joy tomorrow, cooler temps making this the ideal time to get out and get after it. We’ll do it like this:
1-1.5 mile warm up and down
If running Peak to Peak 10 Mile- 3 X 1 Mile @ Goal Race Pace, 6:00 recovery and hydration between
If not running Pk2Pk- 2 X 2 Miles @ Goal 10K Race Pace, 10:00 recovery and hydration between
If competing in Madison, WI Ironman- 4 X 400 @ 5K Race Pace, 2:00 recovery and hydration between
I had just the right mix of strength, flexibility, huevos, and Lone Star Beer to be proficient on the mechanical bull at Gilley’s. If I wasn’t melting some cowgirl’s heart on the dance floor you’d find me showing off my mad riding skills. I want to see Lee Anderson on one of these things!
