I’ve run 11 races so far in 2011. None of them have been easy or fun. I keep plugging away expecting that breakthrough performance that will eventually make all the suffering worth it. And it will come, always does, just takes longer the more days (and months, and years) that are ex’d off of the calendar.
I’ve confided to the mates how difficult this season has been for me. They remind me that my results are not what are important. The fact that I am out there modeling Effort serves the intended purpose of keeping them fired up in their own racing. While I appreciate their kindness I still have a lot of work to do before I’m satisfied with my results. Not sitting back on laurels from the 80s or 90s, rather getting out there and testing myself frequently, not fearing the competition or the day, my 53+ years notwithstanding.
It has been mentioned before, but that is certainly a hallmark of Team Nebraska Brooks. We love to race more than we like to talk about past racing glory or imagined success in the future. Bring it today or ssshhh!
And the mates brought it yesterday at the Lake Wehrspann 10K and 2 Mile. Cory Logsdon was the Male overall winner in the 10K in 35:10, I’m checking but this is likely a new course record. Megan Zavorka was 5th overall in a new women’s course record of 39:27. Megan has been selected for the Women’s USA 10 Mile National Championships Athlete Development Program. She’ll toe the line in Minneapolis the first weekend in October. Linda Barnhart (44:20) was 2nd overall female, and 14th overall, pretty amazing for her 48 years of age. Mike Reilly and I both represented as well. In the 2 Mile, Michaela van der Westhuizen (11:19) was the Overall winner, outdistancing not only the women’s field but also beating the first man to the line by over a minute and a half.
We will host the 3rd Corporate Cup Qualifier this Wednesday evening at 6:00. It looks to be the coolest temps of the week so plan on coming out and getting a good tune up!
35 days until we have a new Men’s course record at the Omaha Corporate Cup! Guaranteed this time, I’ve only waited nearly 11 years.
Our TNB annual party is this coming Saturday. A lot of our mates are going out Saturday morning to destroy a locally notorious training route. http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=197835 Good old USATF. I’ll be hitting it up along with the Good Mates and would welcome any others to keep me company, start time announced later this week.
This morning’s mailbag, From Nick Hanson:
“Will –
Thanks for keeping the “Run Guru Sez” blog updated! I’ve checked it out every couple of days since I moved out to Ohio. It’s nice seeing what the Omaha area runners are up to. You guys should come do some runs out here sometime – a lot of good trail running around here, and some good road marathons too! We have two 100 mile trail runs and tons of 50 milers/50ks here as well.”
Nick is also doing a study on long distance runners that you might find interesting, here is the link: https://redcap.osumc.edu/surveys/index.php?hash=e369853df766fa44e1ed0ff613f563bd
Giddyup!
