To the future. It is now. In 1968 I read George Orwell’s classic “1984”. If you’ve never read it you should. In 2015. Same lessons. No doubting Big Brother’s omni presence now, glad my generation had a heads up and some of us paid attention.
Everything you have ever written, every post, every tweet, every snap chat, every instagram, every drog, every kind of thing you’ve ever committed to cyber space still lives. And is retrievable.
Ain’t that a hoot.
A couple more thank you’s from 2014.
Starting with Walter Key. We’re lucky to have him as a member of our U.S. Armed Services. And Nebraska Run Guru Elite. As an old boatswain’s mate I am particularly proud of his Navy career. He’s in Japan now but left his mark at last May’s Lincoln Marathon. His 2:46:55 eclipsing my personal best by a mere :01, good enough for 16th overall.
And Michael Hajek Jones (Hajek rhymes with Kayak). The one person in Nebraska that possesses more USATF acumen than I. And not afraid to use it. He was a very talented runner as a youth at Boystown. The best chance for a stellar career whisked away when UNO cut their track program back in the 1980s. The fire still burning Ever So Brightly within him. We’ve stood nose to nose, toe to toe, conviction to conviction. The second person (behind only Alan Higley) I met with when arriving in 2001. We spent a couple of hours getting to know each other and he filled me in on the history of USATF and competitive running in Nebraska. We battled through several annual meetings but he’s also nominated me for the association presidency. Now while we’re not always eye to eye we are surely shoulder to shoulder.
I read over at NDORFNZ where Kaci Lickteig finished 2014 with 5,268.49 miles. Averaging over 100 miles per week for an entire year. Wow.
Time to start all over again.
This Old House. The ones and twos on the thermometer bring time for some home improvement projects.
Linda stripped the worn carpeting off of the basement stairs, revealing a fine pine landing. The Bar None’s color wheel of red, yellow and blue bringing new cheer and tying in to the rest of the house.
Linda put a shiny star on my man card yesterday. I’d never installed a garbage disposal before but was confident that it could be done with a little patience.
Walter Key with his Nebraska Run Guru Elite mates Pete Kostelnick and Stacy Mangers Shaw. NRGE dominated the Lincoln Marathon last May. Riddle: If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Answer: Yes, yes it does.
