Kansas City Smoke that is. While I love to extol the prowess of our Team Nebraska mates (and excellence within our Omaha Endurance Group and anywhere else I see it locally) I would be remiss not to give our USATF Elite Development Club to the south a little love for their performances this past weekend. They had a couple Masterful performances that should be noted. 50 year old Kevin Miller ran an astonishing 4:33.99 1 mile at the Iowa State Last Chance Indoor Meet. 40 year old Ron Kochanowicz set a lifetime 5000m PR of 16:28.26. At last weekend’s DFW Half Marathon 54 year old Keith Long blasted a 1:16 half marathon. These cats aren’t just talking about the good old days and I’m digging that. Truly inspiring.
Speaking of good masters runners I heard from 60+ Lou Soukup recently. He has been hanging out down in Florida this winter (snow bird) and kicking some butt in his age group. He reports no shortage of races or competition, I’m looking forward to his return as he blistered me with frequency last year. I’m lean and mean now though and will give him all he wants. The fact he’s 6 years my senior doesn’t elicit any chance of my taking it easy on him either. Lou, thanks for touching base and letting me know you are a regular reader ; )
Spring time in Nebraska. The winds are really picking up and that is part of what makes us so tough.
The Dash For Diamonds is this coming Saturday. I had the pleasure of touring the Angel Guardians facility last week and came away quite moved. The great work they are doing on behalf of the developmentally disabled makes this weekend’s run one of the most deserving charity events of the year. Team Nebraska will be out in force. David Adams and Megan Zavorka already have sparkles in their eyes, we’ll see if they can keep the stones in Nebraska and on the team.
The Leprechaun Chase is also Saturday. Eric Rasmussen and Bridget Easley will likely battle for the 1 beer prize. The winning gender gets a freebie. Matt Schneider is also entered as well as quite a few other Good Mates. Ben Cohoon knows how to put on a novelty race with the very best of them. We would though love to see the course USATF Certified at some point.
Giddyup!
