The more I learn about Indiahoma, its people and its history, the more impressive it becomes. We should never forget. My opinion is that the land between Big Sandy Creek and Post Oak Creek plays one of the most significant parts in American History.
Big tip of the sombrero to Sherrie Ann and Randy Carter for setting my nose to trail. Randy is kin to an iconic figure in our story. Herman Lehmann was the subject of “Nine Years Among The Indians“, Herman Lehmann, 1927, detailing his life between 1870-1879. It is a firsthand account of life with the Apaches and Comanche Tribes. Lehmann was close to and lived with Quanah Parker from 1877-1878.
All this occurring against the backdrop of forced assimilation of the Native American Indian. The Treaty of Medicine Lodge in 1867 established reservations, the beginning of the end for the free roaming tribes of the great plains and beyond. Only 20 years would pass before those same reservations were busted up by the Dawes Act of 1887. Allowing the flood of immigrants to settle previously held lands.

The Captured, by Scott Zesch, 2004. A true story of Abduction by Indians on the Texas Frontier. A fascinating deep dive, very well researched and written.
Chevato, by William Chebatah, 2009. Another very well written book. Chevato played such an integral part in Indiahoma that the street in front of our school, Chebatah is in his honor.

The Indiahoma Community Development Center (ICDC) is undergoing a major face lift. Big thanks to everyone that has donated time, money, and effort to the spruce up. New lighting, new paint, new floors, new tables and chairs, and new energy!
The Indiahoma School Carnival is this Friday, October 27th. Games, Bingo, Indian Tacos, Toy Walk, Cake Walk, Maze and more! Starts at 6:00 pm at the School. Come join the fun!!
