Ni-Bthaska-Ke Trail Run, first conducted in 2005. The Omaha Tribe name for the Platte River, it means “flat water.” The original name for the Nebraska Trail Run. Conducted for 11 years at Platte River State Park. Originally a 12K, we added a 4 mile in 2010 (I broke my foot running it barefoot.) We also added a half marathon for two years, both won by 4 time Oly Trials Marathon qualifier Patrick Rizzo.
Nebraska Trail Run moved to Chalco in 2018, changed to an 8K. A decent turn out, won by Jay Welp. Event’s nadir in 2019 with only a handful of participants.
Moved the race back to PRSP in 2020 and changed to a 10K. The very first local race canceled due to covid, conducted virtually.
April 2021 also going virtual due to the virus. The very last local race canceled due to covid, conducted virtually.
November 2021. Venue changed to Lake Wanahoo, distances amended to 5 Mile and 8 Mile. “Run The Prairie”
Flexibility, adaptability, resiliency. Labor of Love. 16 years, 17 editions. No ways tired. I think we might have the most longevity of any trail run in the state. ***Nod here to the venerable Beer & Bagel, more history but its first decade+ conducted at Mt. Crescent in Iowa.
