Title today thanks to our mate Jeff Nielsen. I put out a call earlier this week for our mates to gather and train as a group. The very best way for their fitness and performances to improve is to train with those of similar abilities. We’ve had a great turn out all summer at our Wednesday night track work and that is a good start. But with the fall season soon upon us the more time the lads & lasses spend in each other’s company, the better the results will be when the Real Racing starts.
Towards that end I hauled the bones out of the shucks at 4:15 this morning, loaded up the bike, and met Shain Kephart, David Bohlken, and Justin Mollak at the dojo for a 5 am start time. Linda showed too, like me, she never asks of others what she’s not willing to do herself. Very different tableau that early, heightened senses not accustomed to the auto pilot that is typical of my favorite training ground. Primarily night vision, anticipating crossing paths with some varmints (Justin was sprayed by a skunk last week), but also using the ears to hear voices carrying in the quiet stillness of pre dawn. Not all varmints are on four legs ; ) We’ll build on the group in up coming weeks, steel sharpens steel.
Amazed watching last night’s 50 meter freestyle finals. Those cats don’t take a single breath in that mad sprint, wow.
And speaking of wow, our mate Stacy Shaw ran the Lunar Run 100K in Kansas last weekend. With a 9:00 pm start time she accomplished the remarkable by finishing 3rd Overall and 1st Female, all without a head lamp or flashlight, preferring the light of the moon and the stars to guide her. I’ve said it before, she’s without a doubt the toughest/fastest masters female in Nebraska, and apparently beyond.
Update on long time mate Shannon Stenger, he had knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus on Monday morning. I’ve long held that Shannon has demonstrated more range than any mate in the history of the club with a 2:29 marathon pr to match his sub 4:00 1500 meter wheels. He will be putting on the Morse Bluff Road Run a week from tomorrow so he’s keeping busy while on the mend. Let’s all wish him a speedy recovery and quick return to the roads.
That collective groan you are hearing is just the mates enduring their first week back under Killer Coach. From 3 weeks off to a rigorous first week, there are a lot of sore, heavy, stiff, achy muscles. I’m able to tell them and you that next week the fatigue will be replaced with confidence and renewed fire in their pursuit of excellence. Steel sharpens steel.
